Lee Shulman defines signature pedagogies as “the types of teaching that organize the fundamental ways in which future practitioners are educated for their new professions” (p. 52). In taking up his challenge to look for homologous signatures in disciplines outside the professions, Gurung, Chick, and Haynie have opened up fruitful paths of inquiry. The first question may be the most important one because it raises the crucial issue for the nonprofessional fields: If signature pedagogies are the fundamental ways in which future practitioners are educated for their new professions, for what “profession” do undergraduate majors in humanities, fine arts, social science, and natural science prepare students? If the chemistry student is not likely to become a practicing chemist, the history student an historian, the English major a literary critic, or the art student a practicing artist (the case may be less clear in the fine arts), what are we preparing students to “profess” in these fields? How do students educated in these broad areas think and act in the world? What do they value and how do they make that determination? Are there significant, signature differences between fields? These questions get to the heart of the undergraduate experience in higher education.
